Interior searches are the most controlled environment — a good place to raise a new height or distraction one variable at a time.
Reading the difficulty tiers
Novice (2–3): a controlled interior search with no distraction and a ground-level hide — the easiest place to introduce a brand-new skill or a new target odor. Intermediate (4–6): add one variable at a time — a container search, a low distraction, or an elevated hide. Advanced (7–8): combine two harder variables, like a vehicle search with real distractions. Elite (9–10): an exterior search with high distraction and a buried or deeply contained hide — close to trial conditions.
The three factors are independent, so the same total score can describe two very different searches. Use the tier as a rough difficulty gauge, and the individual factors to decide exactly what you're training.

How is the difficulty score built?
Three factors each contribute points: environment (interior is easiest, exterior hardest, because airflow gets harder to predict), distraction level (none to high), and hide height (ground level is easiest, a buried or deeply contained hide is hardest because the scent has to work its way out). The three add up to a 1–10 score.
Why is 'buried' harder than 'elevated'?
A buried or deeply contained hide traps the scent, so less of it escapes for the dog to find — it has to search more thoroughly and commit to a source it can't see or reach directly. An elevated hide is usually still open to airflow; it mainly tests whether the dog will point its nose upward, not whether it can find the odor at all.
Should I only train at one difficulty tier at a time?
No — mixing in an occasional easier hide keeps confidence and reward rate up even while you're pushing a harder skill elsewhere in the same session. Use the tier as a planning guide, not a strict ladder you have to climb one rung at a time.
